What Causes Sensitive Skin? The Science + How to Fix It
Share
Skin that stings, flushes, itches or reacts to products is a signal for skin sensitivity. In most people, "sensitive skin" is the visible result of a barrier response you can actually address. Here's what's really happening, and how to calm it.
What "sensitive skin" actually means
Sensitive skin describes skin that over-reacts to things that shouldn't cause a reaction - skincare, weather, even stress. Surveys across the world find that a majority of adults describe their skin as sensitive at some point, and it's rising, especially in urban environments.
Crucially, dermatologists distinguish two things:
-
Sensitive skin - a reactivity state: stinging, tightness, burning, itching or flushing, often without a visible rash.
-
Sensitized skin - a temporary version triggered by something you did (over-exfoliating, harsh actives, pollution).
Both usually trace back to the same root cause.
The science: why skin becomes sensitive
Three mechanisms usually work together.
1. A weakened skin barrier
Your outer skin layer is a "brick wall" - skin cells held together by a mortar of barrier lipids (ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids working together). When that mortar is depleted, the wall becomes leaky. Irritants and allergens penetrate more easily, and water escapes, leaving skin dry and primed to react. A compromised barrier is the single most common driver of sensitive skin.
2. Low-grade inflammation and a disrupted microbiome
A leaky barrier lets in triggers that spark subtle, ongoing inflammation. The skin's microbiome - its community of resident microbes - also shifts, which can amplify redness and reactivity.

How to fix sensitive skin
The strategy: rebuild the barrier, and reduce triggers
1. Simplify Skincare Routine
The fastest way to calm reactive skin is to remove variables. Strip back to a minimal routine - gentle cleanser, barrier moisturizer, sunscreen - and pause actives and fragranced products for a few weeks.
2. Cleanse without stripping
Use a low-pH, fragrance-free, gentle cleanser. Harsh cleansing is the most common self-inflicted cause of sensitivity.
3. Rebuild the barrier
Replenish the three barrier lipids together - ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids - supported by humectants (glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol) and niacinamide, which helps strengthen the barrier and reduce redness over time. A stronger barrier means fewer triggers reach those over-reactive nerves.
4. Choose calming, not stimulating, ingredients
Favor soothing agents (panthenol, allantoin, madecassoside/centella, oat) and avoid common irritants: added fragrance, essential oils, high concentrations of alcohol, and aggressive acids.
5. Protect every single day
UV is both a trigger and a barrier-degrader. A gentle, broad-spectrum sunscreen is essential - and for sensitive skin, mineral or low-irritant formulas are often best tolerated.
6. Address the lifestyle triggers
Sleep, stress management and reducing hot showers exposure genuinely move the needle - barrier recovery is measurably slower under stress and sleep deprivation.
The Formularx routine for sensitive skin
Sensitive skin was the reason we started. Our formulas are designed to strengthen the barrier and quiet the reaction - fragrance-conscious, pH-respecting, and built for skin that's had enough.
-
Barrier Comfort Gentle Ceramide Cleanser - low-pH, non-stripping cleansing that leaves skin comfortable, never tight. (Where calming sensitive skin begins.)
-
Barrier Relief - our hero moisturizer for reactive skin, built around all three barrier-lipid families plus niacinamide and soothing humectants to rebuild resilience. (Fewer triggers get through a stronger barrier.)
-
Barrier Plus Peptide Ceramide Moisturizer - an intensive option for dry, reactive or badly compromised skin that needs richer occlusion and overnight support.
-
HydraVeil - lightweight, layerable hydration for sensitive skin that wants moisture without heaviness - ideal for daytime or oilier sensitive types. (Hydration that doesn't overwhelm.)
-
Sun Relief - daily broad-spectrum protection formulated to be gentle on reactive skin. (Protect the barrier you're rebuilding.)
